Theme of The Game
Book of Helios is part of a huge category of Book games, with certain mechanics that are common for most of them. While the majority of the slots from this category will rely on Ancient Egypt for inspiration, Betsoft decided to go with the stories of Ancient Greece for this one. The inspiration comes from Helios in particular, the god of the Sun, which flew a chariot with winged horses across the sky each day.
The horses are shown to the sides, while Helios is visible at the top, so the impression is that the chariot is hidden behind the 5 reels. The symbols include stone-made Royals for the first five positions, and then we find four top icons as well (whip, bow and arrow, female explorer, and Helios).

How To Play It
You will find that you can spend anywhere from $0.10 to $10, and in exchange you will always have 10 active paylines.
It’s not a very generous game area when it comes to potential combinations, since only 10 win lines are available on 5×3 reels. Still, it ends up doing alright for itself, once all its features kick in.
Special Features
While the Book category is incredibly crowded, you will find that certain mechanics were modified, and the experience in Book of Helios is quite different from what you’d expect.
The Book symbol is reserved only for three out of five reels, the middle ones (2-4). It will be used as both a wild and a scatter from there. It’s easiest to just get its help with the formation of some new combination, but there is more that it can do for you.
When it appears on all three reels where it’s allowed, the Book scatters will trigger 10 free spins. The game picks one of the regular symbols at this point, and it gives it the ability to expand.
Each round, the game pays for the regular combinations that are formed, and then it will expand the special symbols if they appear on 2+ or 3+ reels. If they can create a combination on enough reels, they expand and they do so. They don’t have to appear on adjacent reels for this to happen.
There is also a chance that Book wilds will be present at the same time, in which case they expand and they apply multipliers of up to 5x to the resulting wins.
Unfortunately, you can’t retrigger this feature once inside. You do have the option to buy access to the free spins though.
Maximum Payouts
Thanks to the multipliers, free spins, and the expanding symbols that are included, Book of Helios could pay as much as 20,168x the stake at the end of a single paid spin (and everything else that comes with it). It’s unusual for a Book slot, and I’d say that 9 in 10 such games pay only 5,000x.
Especially since it ends up paying more, Book of Helios has high volatility, but at least you get an acceptable RTP (95.58%). Still, there will be many more Book slots that do even better RTP-wise.
Summary
Overall, I feel like Book of Helios has what it takes to be popular with the Book crowd. I’m not a fan of that lower RTP, but the excellent top jackpot might just make up for it.
