Riders of the Storm
- The Bonus feature has volatility options
- Fun game to play
- Low symbol pays
How far are you willing to go for treasure? For some, their own safety is more important than a chest full of gold. But that doesn’t include the thrill-seekers, who are willing to brave the worst storms for a chance at wealth and glory! And while we’d personally never take such a journey, it does make for a fantastic story. Probably why Thunderkick selected it as its theme!
The developer shows that you don’t need superb animations or overtly detailed symbols to make a great looking slot. The background, showing the incoming storm, is easily the best part of this game’s graphics. You’ll see the falling rain and a mass of grey clouds slowly getting closer and closer. You’ll also see the occasional flash of lightning in the distance and within the clouds themselves!
Unlike a real storm, however, you can choose the risk that will come your way during free spins! You’ll also come across Walking Wilds with attached multipliers and randomly appearing Wild reels.
Developer
Few developers manage to win us over with their first release. Thunderkick doesn’t count among them, but we knew we stumbled upon something special when we first played their slots. We weren’t alone in this sentiment. Despite launching in 2012, the software provider has become synonymous with high quality games with no compromises. They may not have a release each month, but when you see their logo, you know that slot will be fun, lucrative, and worth the wait!
How to Play it
Riders of the Storm is played on a 5×3 board with 243 ways to win, forgoing traditional paylines. And since there’s no paylines, there’s no way to turn them on or off! You set your total stake by clicking on the casino token, and selecting one of the pre-determined values. Players can bet between $0.10 and $100 on each spin.
Thunderkick wisely operates on the policy of: if it works, don’t fix it. Their user interface has looked the same since their first games, making it instantly recognisable. Elegant, cool, and easy to use, it ticks all the checkboxes that we like!
Unfortunately, their Autoplay option leaves a lot to be desired. You can only choose how many auto spins will be played. No additional settings are available anywhere, making it one of the few areas where this developer is lagging behind the competition.
Of course, we’re inclined to forgive them because of the gorgeous visuals. Really, it’s the background that’s doing all the heavy lifting. The clouds seem distant and far-away during normal gameplay. But once special features get involved, the storm comes closer, and makes you feel like you’re actually risking your neck!
Icon designs are a mixed bag. The human characters are fantastic: their personality is clear even with a single glance! The awesome effect they create is sadly muted due to the generic playing card royals being present on the board.
Special Features
When a Wild lands on the playing field, it will do so with a multiplier attached. Keep an extra careful eye on the Wilds during free spins, since they will move one position to the left every turn.
During normal gameplay, up to four reels can randomly be transformed into full-reel Wilds.
Collect three or more Scatters to win the free spins. The number of Scatters only determines how much money it will award. The number of extra turns, the Wild multiplier and the stacked symbol are all determined by player choice. Gamblers get to choose between these three variants:
The low variance option, with 15 free spins, a 2x Wild multiplier, and the mechanic as the stacked icon.
The medium volatility option, with 10 free spins, a 3x Wild multiplier, and the inventor as the stacked symbol.
The high variance option, with 6 free spins, a 5x Wild multiplier, and the captain as the stacked icon.
There’s also a fourth option, which determines everything randomly. Choosing random can also make Wilds stacked instead of the three offered symbols.
Maximum Payouts
Thunderkick’s release is uniquely designed so players control the volatility. Its top prize is worth 26426x your total stake! The slot has an RTP of 96.14%, which is above the current industry average.
Summary
Beautiful graphics, thrilling special features, and a jackpot that makes your mouth water. If you’ve forgotten why Thunderkick is such a beloved software provider, this will serve as an excellent reminder! Riders of the Storm shows that the developer hasn’t lost their touch, even after a three month break. Fingers crossed we get more great slots in the future!
