Today Gates of Olympus™ is a slot that pretty much needs no introduction. Once it was launched the game quickly became one of the most popular slots in the Pragmatic Play slot portfolio. Needless to say, it’s also one of my favorite slots as well, so I give it a try on every occasion I can. The slot has a lot to offer in every way, and the top 5,000x stake payout is also a very attractive factor.
The popularity of Gates of Olympus grew to such lengths that soon Pragmatic Play also released Starlight Princess. This was basically a clone game, featuring the same bonus round and payouts. The only difference was in the visual details and the sounds. But this was more than welcome among players since now you could try the same game if the original was not in a good mood.
Who will enjoy this game?
Gates of Olympus is a slot loved by pretty much all players. It does require a bit of a bigger balance to chase the bonus round, where the extra bet does come in handy. It increases your chances to land the feature and potentially hitting a big win. But the game is mostly loved by players playing with pure cash and big bankrolls. They go on a shopping spree, buying one buy the bonus feature after the other, hoping to land that max payout.

*** Slots volatility is how big and how often you win. High volatility = big wins, but wait longer. Low volatility = frequent wins, but smaller payoffs.
Gates of Olympus Payout Rating 9/10 (see how we rate slots)
The Gates of Olympus has a good RTP of 96.50%, which is slightly above the industry average of 96.00%. While some slot games offer advantages in RTP when buying the bonus, like the Itero Slot, this is not the case with Gates of Olympus.
The ante bet comes at an extra cost of 25% of your bet; however, there is no real advantage in the RTP when using the ante bet, as it also has an RTP of 96.50%. Nevertheless, it doubles your chance of hitting the free spins. I always activate it when I play Gates of Olympus, and I would recommend activating it if you're looking for those big wins, which normally come in the free spins. However, remember that the Ante Bet comes at an extra cost of 25% of your bet.
How to Play Gates of Olympus
Overall, the slot is pretty simple to play. Before you spin the reels, you need to decide on a bet size. It ranges from $0.20 to $125 per spin. You can also activate the Ante Bet feature. It will cost you a quarter more than your original bet. This feature increases the chances of landing a bonus round, by increasing the number of scatters that land on the screen. Usually, I don’t recommend this option for most slots, but in my experience for Gates of Olympus, it’s well worth the extra cost.
A Decade of Playing Slots
To be honest I never thought I would make a career and have a full-time job playing slots and gambling. But here we are, a decade later and I’m still playing slots across online casinos. This experience helps me instantly recognize which slots are worth playing and where I have the biggest chances to hit some big payouts. For me, Gates of Olympus is one of those slots that instantly caught my attention and I’ll keep on playing it for a long time.
My own Experience Playing Gates of Olympus
Playing Gates of Olympus can be a real roller coaster at times. You can go for hundreds of spins and not land the feature. Other times the bonus can land pretty fast and pay big. I’ve had some great wins on the game, but sadly those 500x the stake multis and the maximum payout remain elusive on my screen. I can’t say I’m not disappointed by this as I have seen other players try the game just a few times and land the max win. But that’s just my luck so far and I know one of these days a bonus with my name on it is going to land.
For Gates of Olympus, the designers went with the symbols pay anywhere on the screen feature. This means you need to land at least 8 matching symbols across the reels, regardless of their position, to get a win. This design is used in many of their slots, like Sweet Bonanza. This is also one of the few slots that don’t have a Wild symbol.
The game also comes with a Tumble feature. Once a win lands on the screen all of the symbols that form it are removed from the screen and the rest of the symbols fall to the bottom. Then a new set of symbols falls from the top, so you can get more wins in a single spin. There’s no limit to how many winning tumbles you can get per spin, so the payouts can be quite high.
But the best part of the game is the win multipliers. They can land both in base play and in the free spins bonus. The multiplier can come with a value of x2, x3, x4, x5, x6, x8, x10, x12, x15, x20, x25, x50, x100, x250 and x500. What’s even more attractive is the fact that you can land more than one multiplier per spin, so their values are added together. The total multiplier is then applied to the total win of the spin, including all successful tumbles.
Free Spins Bonus
To trigger the feature in Gates of Olympus you need to land 4, 5, or 6 scatters anywhere on the screen. Regardless of the number of triggering scatters you are awarded 15 free spins. If you manage to land 3 or more scatters during the feature you will get an additional 5 free spins, on top of the ones you already have.
During the feature on the left side of the reels you have the multiplier meter and on the right side is the animation of Zeus. You can land multis on the reels or Zeus can raise his hand and add more multis on the screen. Each multiplier that is awarded on the screen and is part of a win is added to the multiplier meter. The total multi is then applied to the overall win. This is why the multiplier meter can go very high and why Gates of Olympus can produce great payouts.
Comparison with Other slots
As I mentioned before the easiest comparison of Gates of Olympus is with the new Starlight Princess slot game. These are basically the same games in terms of payouts and most features but come with different visuals. Some similarities can also be found in Sweet Bonanza, with the win multipliers in the bonus round. But on Sweet Bonanza slot the top payout is over 21, 000x the stake, so may want to give it a try as well.
Benefits and Drawbacks
Gates of Olympus is a very fun and exciting slot to play. Once you trigger the bonus round you are always on edge as you are waiting for that 500x multi to hit the screen. If two of them land then you are 99% to the max payout. But you need to be aware that Gates of Olympus is a highly volatile slot. You can lose a lot of money playing it and not get any decent wins in return. The most important thing to know about this game is when to cut your losses and stop. You can always come back another day and give it a try.
Useful Game Stats from Pragmatic Play
- Free game hit frequency: 1 in 448
- Wins over 1000x bet: 1 in 45,591
- Max win odds: 1 in 697,350
Gates of Olympus™ is one of the best slots ever released for me and many other players. I love everything about this game. The visuals and animations are spot on, and the bonus round is very fun and exciting. The high multis give you a chance to score some massive wins, and many times this has been a profitable slot for me. However, my goal of hitting the max payout remains to happen, but I hope that will change sometime soon.
